Steffen Saustrup writes about the picture, "Joe Brown, Dorothy Brown, and daughter Annie Laura Brown. Joe and Dorothy were Paul's godparents, and were great people in our lives for many years. Joe and Dorothy have passed on, but as far as I know Annie Laura is still living. They were very active members of Rising Star Baptist Church on E. 20th street, and several times Paul and I stayed for the weekend at their house over across MLK from the golf course (maybe Victoria street?) and would attend church with them. Dorothy was in the choir, and I remember being struck by the loud, active services.

One further note of interest. This was Pat and Mel Oakes' first Sunday at the church and the presence of Black godparents told them they had found their church.

Obituary for Dorothy Mackey Brown: Dorothy Ann was the 7th child born on April 1, 1928 to the late Johnny Mackey and Laura ClarkMackey. At an early age Dorothy confessed a hope in Christ and was baptized at Cottonwood Baptist Church in Cottonwood, Texas under the leadership of the late Rev. S. A. Davis. When Dorothy’s parents moved to Austin, Texas their entire family united with the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. I. W. Robinson. She was faithful to the church serving in the Junior Mission, Mission 2, Senior Choir, Women’s Chorus and as the Church Clerk. She remained a faithful member under her health started to fail.

Dorothy Ann began her elementary education at Cedar Hill, continued on at Cottonwood School and graduated from Utley High School. While keeping up with her classes in Utley, she also attended the Madame C. J. Walker Beauty School where she became an excellent beautician. While working as a beautician, Dorothy met and married Joseph James Brown, Sr., and to this union three beautiful children were born, Joseph James Brown, Jr., Charles Brown and Annie Laura Brown.

Dorothy was always striving to do more for her family, so leaving her job as a beautician, she took a job with the Austin Independent School District as a cafeteria worker. Later Dorothy continued her education and while she worked for AISD, she attended night classes to study Data Processing. She completed her studies in data processing and upon graduation, she took a job with the State of Texas as a Keypunch operator. Dorothy worked for the State of Texas until her retirement.

Dorothy was called home on Thursday, November 30, 2017.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law Mrs. Pearl Carter; her husband; her brothers Booker, John, Vivian and J. D. Mackey; her sisters Bernice Bedford and Earlene Fowler, her granddaughter Shantae Brown-Hill and her son-in-law Garry Shultz.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Joe Jr. and wife Fawn of Round Rock, Texas; Chuck of Pflugerville, Texas; Annie Laura of Austin, Texas; step-son Henry Ivory and wife Carolyn of Bowie, Maryland; her sisters Gladys Washington, Louree Atkins, her brother Henry Mackey and wife Roberta, all of Austin, Texas; two godsons; two goddaughters, thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dorothy loved her family and friends and she enjoyed cooking for them, she was well known for her Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and her 4th of July picnic.
