John Bishop Winter (1834-1905) was born in Perth, Scotland in 1834 to James Scott and Ann Crane Winter. He was a hatter by trade. He married Christina Darling (1846-1903) on May 9, 1865. She was the daughter of George (1817-56) and Agnes Gilchrist (1819-65) Darling. George was a haberdasher and when John married Christina, he married into the business, hence he had a reason to stay in Perth while three of his male siblings emmigrated to the US. They had three children: daughters Agnes (1868-1959) and Christinia (1877-1963) neither of which married. Their son, James Winter (1870-1938) married Margaret Kidd (1888-1942); and they had two daughters, Mollie Winter (1905-41), who married David Murie (1904-85) and Margaret "Mardie" Winter. Mardie never married.
Some details on John and Christina's four children:
Agnes Winter, b. Perth (5/18/1868-2/l6/1959}, d. Newport on Tay, Scotland, unmarried She was a teacher and served as principal of St. Johnstown private school..
James Wlnter, b. Perth. (6/7/1870-1938). Married Margaret Easton Kidd (1868-1942) on Aug. 28, 1902 in Dundee, Scotland. James and Margaret had
two daughters—Mollie Winter. b. Aug. 26. 1905. Mollie married. David Murie on April 16, 1938. Mollie died on June 9. 1941 in Perth leaving no children. Her sister, Margaret "Mardie", was born and died in Perth, (July 22. 1909-Nov. 12, 1989). She was the last of the family. While unmarried.Mardie felt that the son from her brother-in-law's marriage, after the death of Mollie, was her nephew and she loved dearly David and his wife Hazel. Many in the US knew Mardie, as she made several trip there and rode the bus to visit many of her relatives. She was a wonderful host in her home, Rosemont, in Perth, to many relatives who stopped to visit.
Margaret Darling was born on June 27, 1872 in Perth and died Aug 27, 1926 in St Johnstown, Perth.
Christina was born in Perth on May 15, 1877 and died at Newport-on-Tay, Scotland on 9/15/1963. She never married.
Acknowledgement: Many of the photos here came from the collection of Margaret "Mardie" Winter. They were generously scanned and provided by David Murie. David's father was David Andrew Rollo Muries whose first wife was Maria "Mollie" Darling Winter, sister of Mardie Winter. Sadly Mollie died in 1941 at the age of 35. David remarried and David is a child of that marriage. Since Mardie Winter never married and Mollie and David had no children, she considered David her nephew. When she died she bequeathed her estate to David and thus he became the owner of her photographs. The Winter family is deeply in David's debt for the loving and responsible way he has hand these treasures and for his generous sharing with the family.

George Maxwell and Marie Easson Kidd Family |
||
I am a PhD student at the University of Dundee, Scotland, researching educated Victorian women. Whilst going through the minutes of Dundee School Board I came across the following entry: Dundee School Board minutes, 1891-92, page 30. - Margaret B. Kidd, LLA, teacher at Brown St School, sought the permission of the School Board to leave school at 4 o'clock to attend Botany Class at the University - permission granted. The LLA (Lady Literate in Arts) was a degree for which young ladies could study mostly at home; it was at University level, but could be taken slowly, one subject at a time, so that young ladies would still have time for their daughterly duties! Margaret however took hers in just three years. Her sister Jessie took five years to gain her degree. I was intrigued that Margaret went onto to further study after her LLA. I googled her and found your wonderful website with photos of Margaret and Jessie as girls, and of Margaret, her husband and daughters Molly and Mardie. Alison McCall Dundee School Board minutes 1901-1902, p623 (staff list) Dundee School Board minutes 1902-1903, p835. Dundee School Board minutes 1902-1903, p848 This means that Margaret was working as a teacher by day, and studying for her LLA in her spare time! She must have been very keen! There were two routes into teaching then. The first was by attending Teacher Training College. There was no college in Dundee, so this would have meant Margaret leaving home to study in either Edinburgh or Aberdeen (or, theoretically, Glasgow, but I haven't come across anyone from Dundee going to Glasgow.) The second route was simply by teaching and gaining practical experience, which was the route Margaret chose. In either case, teachers could apply for a certificate to confirm they were competent teachers; this was done one year after leaving college, or whenever a non-college teacher thought that she had reached the required standard. Margaret got her Certificate in 1889.

Unlabelled miniature c. 1890, by Robertson of Dundee. David Murie comments on the picture, "Unlabelled miniature c. 1890, by Robertson of Dundee. This family group appear in several photographs. I earlier thought this was the Kidd sisters with their mother, but that was when I thought Jessie Kidd was a female name, not a male name! I am only aware of two sisters in this family, so if these are Kidds then who is the extra lady? Also, the lady at the back of the group is not Maria Easson if I have identified the earlier Kidd photograph correctly, so I'm still eager to identify who these people are. A later picture of the same four does identify M. B. Kidd (Mardie Winter's mother) as one of the four. Perhaps it is her and her sister not with their mother but with two girls from their wider family? |

Winter (nee Kidd), then either James Winter (I reckoned since he didn't take the picture) or Alexander R. Kidd (suggested by the Oakes), then Marie E. Kidd. The lady in the centre of the middle row is Maria Kidd (nee Easson), and the little girl at centre front is almost certainly Mollie Winter. Others unknown. |

1921, George M. Kidd (b.1897). Son of George E. Kidd and Grandson of George M. Kidd. Cousin of Mardie Winter. Photo confirmed by Muriel Kidd Heaton. She writes, "He was my Dad's older brother & was known as Max," David Murie wrote "Inscribed "Sincerely yours, G. Maxwell Kidd, Christmas 1921". I know of one George Maxwell Kidd, born 1826 in Dundee and married in 1857, but this chap must have been from one of the later generations of the family. |

Ruby and daughter, Isobel Kidd. Hand-written on reverse: "Isobel 9 months old". 632, Velox. Isobel Lunan Kidd, born March 27, 1935, in Dundee. She is the daughter of Frederich Heiton and Ruby Lunan Kidd. Frederich's father was George Easson Kidd, Mardie's uncle. If this is correct then the picture is Dec. 1935. Does not look like Scotland in winter. Isobel's sister Muriel confirms the id and says they were probably living at Samnugger Mill on the Hoogley River. There was a Samnugger Jute Mill there. The jute industry had a start in Dundee and prospered until later part of 19th century when cheaper labor and raw material were needed. Various Dundee jute mill owners created companies in Calcutta, along the Hoogley River. These mills prospered throught the First World War and fell on hard times by the late 1930s. In October of 1835, Ruby and Isobel leave for Calcutta, India, Isobel is 6 months old. In May of 1937, when Isobel was 2, she and her mother Ruby arrive in London from Calcutta. |

Murdoch-Winter family ties. (Courtesy of David Murie)
| ||
Dr. Murdoch came from Scotland to Canada as a missionary of the London Colonial Missionary Society. He Preached in Canada for many years. In 1837 Dr. David Murdoch and Elizabeth Bissett came to the United States with their family of six children, settling first at Ballston, NY in 1841 removing to the Catskill's. He graduated at the University of Glasgow, and he studied Theology with the late Ralph Wardlaw D.D. He preached at the Dutch Reformed Churches in and around Catskill, NY. In 1851 went to Elmira, NY and served as the Minister 1st Presbyterian Church of Elmira, NY. Rev. David joined the Abolition Party, having been a Whig previously, he helped with the Underground RR. He then managed a colored Sunday school over 40 years and he states that was even more unpopular than the RR, especially with the churches. Rev Murdoch was voted out of the Presbyterian Church by the Presbytery. He built a new church Lake Street Presbyterian Church, and 120 of his old congregation went with him. He died before he could give a Sermon at the Pulpit at his new church. There is a large plaque in the vestibule of Lake Street Church in Elmira, NY, in tribute to him. I have the book that by Ralph Wardlaw D. D. wrote and David Murdoch D. D. used as a reference. The book was presented to me by the Minister of Lake Street Church in 2003. David Murdoch wrote many articles and book's which I am collecting.
