James Lumley Kirkton (1806-1880)-Agnes Walker (1825-?)
The Kirkton family originated in Scotland in the area around Alvah in Banffshire. Nearby Kirktown presumably was where they got their family name. The known earliest relatives are John Kirkton (1770-) and his wife Katherine Morisson (or Morrison). Our line descends through James L.(likely Lumley) Kirkton (1806-1880) and his wife Agnes Walker (1825). (Recently discovered a descendent of James L.’s sister, Elizabeth, who married John McKenzie. Her name is Cindy Amey and she lives in Australia. She kindly contributed some McKenzie photos below.) James & Agnes’ son, James Lumley Kirkton Jr. (1859-1911) married Ellen Barton Wilmot (1859-1935). Both had immigrated to America, James in 1886, and Ellen in 1881. Their daughter Ethel Black Kirkton married Murray Winter in Wrentham, MA. She died shortly after childbirth in 1921. Two years later Murray married Ethel’s sister Mary Elizabeth (May) Kirkton. Murray, with his brothers John and Charles founded Winter Brothers Tap and Die Company of Wrentham. Their father had immigrated from Perth, Scotland, in 1866, following his brother Charles who had come in 1857. Patrick, Charles, William Clark and John Bishop (who remained in Perth) were the sons of James Scott Winter, (1797-1871) and Ann Crane (1805-).
Agnes Pauline Kirkton married Jame B. Power on Sept. 19, 1917. Though born in Boston, Agnes, in 1936, filed naturalization pettion for citizenship. Her husband James Bernard Power was born in Dartmouth, N. S. Canada on June 10, 1899.
Pictures available on this page are primarily of James and Ellen’s children: Leonard, Ethel, Helen, Frances, Agnes, Wilfrid and May. More can be found on the Patrick Murray Winter page.
A family tree chart is found at end of this page. Users will have to zoom their browser in order to read the small print necessary to include more generations.

Wrentham School, ca. 192os (Photo from Barbara Larson) This photo of Wrentham Elementary School children has to been taken sometime in the 1920's. Barbara Larsen identified four people in the picture. "Upper left standing alone is Earle Stewart (bow for tie), beside him in the back row is Dick Farrar. Tallest girl in the back row with bow is Celia (Shanker?)... I have heard this name before from my mom but there is more writing under that name. My Aunt Dorothy Ross is sitting in front row far right. I'm sure that there are many more Wrentham townies - Paul Mullen should be in this photo... and also the Colleto kids." Many of these would be in the photo above this one. Earle Stewart, Richard Fay Farrar and Shankar are there. Stewart was born in 1914. Maybe 6 or 7 in photo putting it at 1920-1921. Farrar also born in 1914. Raymond George was born in 1915, maybe right end of third row, next to guy with tie. Donald Hunt Kirkton was born in 1914 and was living in Wrentham. My guess is he is the little boy in dark suit at right end between 2nd and third row. You can compare with his picture in his funeral program further down on the site. Cecilia Shankar was born 1913. Maybe 8 years old in photos. |

For more information and to view an online memorial go to www.wilkinsonbeane.com Comments written by Marilyn Coffin, Don's daughter. "Don had such a colorful life and touched so many people —his stories, Indian dances, scouting, biking, European and later world travels with my mom. They traveled all over Europe, Asia, Islands (East & West) and New Zealand, Japan— riding elephants, doing the hula and running rivers in rafts in Alaska and climbing glaciers. Don always wanted to travel and he and my mom did. They were so devoted to each other. He died at exactly 94 1/2 years, and she died at exactly 93 1/2 years to the exact day. (Isn't that odd?} They were with me in NH for almost 10 years. Don was famous for bringing us little "treasure presents" from the airport where he worked—little American Airlines rings and snacks left over in the planes. He brought out the "Magic Suitcase" with those and tickets on standby to many places—California, Florida, Washington DC, Canada, New York World's Fair—Fun! And each week, he took us on "mystery trips"—hikes through woods, skating on wonderland ponds at night with camp flashlights. We lived a charmed life with him. Wonderful memories! Marilyn. " |
